Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied reports that Moscow plans to reopen a Cold War listening post in Cuba.

Putin said on Thursday that Russia could “meet its defense needs without this component.”

He made the remarks at a summit of the BRICS group, which comprises of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia.

“That is not true, we have not discussed this issue,” Putin, told reporters, adding, “According to an agreement with our Cuban friends, we shut down our center. We have no plans to resume its work.”

Russia’s daily Kommersant had earlier reported that Moscow and Havana had agreed to reopen the Lourdes spy base during Putin’s visit to the island last week.
